Have you ever felt that holidays exist only to keep your family from falling apart? Have you ever had the feeling that there is something missing, be it life, from a plastic skeleton? Have you ever wondered if meaningful ritual only happens over there, in a place you’ve never been, during a time you’ll never travel to? For better or for worse there’s a good reason to feel that way, and unpacking those feelings in order to have the ability to (re)experience authentic of-the-environment spiritual catharsis is what’s needed to rectify the situation.

At the party minds and voices swirl to the momentum of small semi-autonomous gatherings as people respond in body to one another’s stories. Some taken with the absurdity of a joke’s end allow their smile to release into cacophonous laughter, while others who have heard something terrible console with a sympathetic brow. The party is having its effect. People are expressing and listening to those who express. Beverage is being drained and food has settled the tummies. All is good.

The arrival of Halloween’s guest of honor is a much anticipated event in any home celebrating the New Old Halloween Tradition. This year the Hermetic Review‘s very own Molly Q, along with her wonderful roommate Angelica, took on the responsibility of transporting Jack of the Lanterns who, with the help of both Molly and Angelica, looked his absolute finest.

Every gathering of Revelers in the name of the New Old Traditions manifests its own unique Patron Saint, whom we conjure through the collective practice of Exquisite Corpse.

The Patron Saint (PS) is that being—for it would be strange to call it/she/he a “person”—existing wholly outside the confines of temporal rational existence. As such, the PS acts as a perfected intermediary between the world we perceive and the world happening in our blind spots. In essence (and in accordance with the definition provided by The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition Copyright © 2006 by Houghton Mifflin Company) the PS is the intercessor and advocate in heaven of a nation, place, craft, activity, class, or person. Though we Revelers may question strongly the notions of nation and class, we are no doubt pro-Utopia (lit. no-place), -craft, -activity, and -people.
